  • This research of Tsugumi, a novel by Yoshimoto Banana is a literature psychology research with Freudian psychoanalysis theory. Tsugumi was first published in 1992. Theme of this novel is inability to adapt with the environment. The main character of this novel is Tsugumi. Tsugumi is described as a woman who experiences behavioral disorder. In this research, the writer of this paper first analyzed intrinsic elements in this novel and the relation among its elements by using structural theory. Analysis is then performed to determine the relationship between Tsugumiâ��s maladaptive behavior with defense mechanism using Freudian psychoanalysis theory. This theory was chosen because it is able to explain relationship between defense mechanism with behavioral disorder Tsugumiâ��s experiences. The result shows that Tsugumi has anxiety because of her health condition. It makes her do the defense mechanism to reduce anxiety she experiences. Tsugumiâ��s defense mechanism makes her suffer from behavior disorder named maladaptive behavior. This maladaptive behavior causes Tsugumi can not adapt with the environment.
