Daftar Isi:
- This research attempts to investigate the code switching that is found in Indonesian songs written by Indonesian song writers. The research aims at finding out the types of code switching and the reasons/for the composers to switch the language in their songs. This study is expected to give some useful contributions to the theory of Sociolinguistics, particularly the theory of code switching. The findings of this study are expected to give some useful insights to English Department students in order to get a better understanding of the use of code switching by Indonesian song composers. The research uses descriptive qualitative study and the data is in the form of written lyrics. The writer collects the data by finding the lyrics of Indonesian songs in the internet, selecting lyrics that consist of Indonesian-English code switching. The results show that there are three types of code switching which are used by Indonesian song composers, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and tag (emblematic) switching. Six reasons why Indonesian song composers code switch their language are when they are talking about a particular topic, being emphatic about something, inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors, using repetition for clarification, clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor, and expressing group identity. In addition, there is an important reason why they code switch their language, that is for marketing purposes.
