  • Background: The elementary school female studentsâ�� readiness in dealing with menarche is a problem that needs attention. One attempt to address female studentsâ�� unpreparedness in undergoing menarche is to improve the knowledge of the people nearby, one of whom is the teacher. The knowledge of menarche given by the teacher can help students in preparing themselves to deal with menarche by providing the right information through health education. Objective: To discover the effect of health education towards the knowledge of elementary school teachers in preparing female students to deal with menarche. Methods: The type of this research is pre-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design without any control group. The population and sample are fifth grade class teachers and sports teachers in primary schools around Jetis district region, Yogyakarta. The study was conducted in July 2012. The instrument used was a questionnaire of knowledge. The research used the Paired t-test analysis. Result: The knowledge about menarche were largely lacking in people aged > 40 years. In both pretest and posttest, the problematic aspect of knowledge is still the aspect of the menstrual phases. There are differences between the respondents' knowledge about menarche before and after a given intervention. The resulting mean value of pretest and posttest respondents' knowledge increased by 5.38. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of health education towards the knowledge of elementary school teachers in preparing female students to deal with menarche.
