- This research discusses apology expressions in some drama movies. This descriptive study is presented within the framework of pragmatics. The goals of this study are to describe the kinds of utterances expressing apologies, explain how the utterances of apologies are affected by social status relation, and explain how the utterances expressing apologies are affected by familiarity. The data were collected through the utterances of ten drama movies entitled The Holiday, Notting Hill, Knocked Up, Serendipity, What to Expect When Youre Expecting, Chasing Liberty, Flipped, L.O.L, Hes Just Not That Into You, and My Sisters Keeper. Data are classified based on the degree of familiarity and the social status relation between speaker and hearer. The results of this study show that two apology strategies (explicit expression of apology and explanation) dominate the ranks in which explicit expression of apology is the first-highest and explanation is the second-highest. These are then followed by responsibility, offer of repair, and promise of forbearance.
