  • Juusanâ��ya was a short story written by Higuchi Ichiyou and was published in 28 Meiji (1895). It tells about marriage life of Oseki â��the main character and her inability opposes the oppression comes from her husband, Harada Isamu. This research is aimed to analyze how women characters are described on the story and the gender inequalities they cope with within patriarchy environment. Therefore, feminist literature criticism in the perspective of Ruthvenâ��s sociofeminism theory is used in this research. Ruthvenâ��s socio-feminism is used to analyze womenâ��s roles and images depicted in Juusanâ��ya. Furthermore, feminist literature criticism is also used to reveal the types of gender inequalities faced by women characters. The results of this research prove that women characters in Juusanâ��ya is represented as the inferiors i.e. infirmity image, passivity image, and womenâ��s mistreated image. Besides, women characters in this short story also face gender inequalities such as subordination, stereotyping and mental abuse.
