- In Vietnam nowadays, construction activities are focused on soft soil deposits which have low bearing capacity and high compressibility when subjected to loading. Gemalink container terminal project need to construct on highly compressible soft foundation at Ba Ria- Vung Tau province, Vietnam which is required the use of soil improvement works to eliminate significant future settlement from occurring. The combination of prefabricated vertical drains with vacuum preloading is one of the most effective used ground improvement methods in land reclamation project. The field settlement data were analyzed by Asaokas method to predict the ultimate settlement and degree of consolidation of the reclamation land under vacuum preloading with PVDs. Back analysis of the field settlement and piezometer monitoring data also enabled the coefficient of consolidation due to horizontal flow to be closely estimated. Finite element modeling of soft clay and PVDs under vacuum preloading was carried consolidation and compared with the field surface settlement results at study area. The result of research is excellent agreement between the back calculated Ch obtained from settlement (2.48 m2/year) and pore pressure monitoring data (2.72 m2/year). The degree of consolidation were found by Asaokas method ranging from 91% to 97% while the degree of consolidation were found by FEM almost reached about 99%. The predicted ultimate settlement obtained from FEM with the use of Ch(CPTu) and Asaokas method are overestimate while the predicted settlement obtained from FEM with the use of back analyzed Ch and Ch=2Cv were found to be good agreement with each other and actual field settlement. This research also gives the suggestion for relationship between Ch and Cv by the ratio Ch/Cv of 2 in study area.
