  • Background: To improve the quality of healthcare, Dokter Soedarso Regional Public Hospital (subsequently referred to as RSUD Dokter Soedarso) will become a BLUD (Regional Public Service Institution) based on the Government Regulation Number 23 of 2005. Pharmacy instalation is a complementary medical unit that provides pharmaceutical services and that contributes significantly to the improvement of healthcare in hospitals. The problems that confront the pharmaceutical installation in RSUD Dokter Soedarso Pontianak are, beside the medical supplies that do not adequately meet the needs of patients, the drug management has not been fully performed by the pharmacetical installation and, thus, made the pharmaceutical services less optimal. For the pharmaceutical installation to provide optimal service, it is necessary to identify its internal and external conditions in order to develop a strategy to improve the quality of pharmaceutical service in the hospital. Objective: To analyze the external and internal conditions of the pharmaceutical installation and to prepare a matrix of strategy formulation for arrangement of strategic planning in RSUD Dokter Soedarso Pontianak. Method: The study employed a case study design with SWOT matrices. Results: External factor analysis of opportunities and threats derived a positive figure of 0,315 which indicated that the opportunity for the pharmaceutical installation in RSUD Dokter Soedarso (2.05) is higher than the threath (1.735). Internal factors analysis, i.e. of strenghts and weaknesses of pharmaceutical installation in RSUD Dokter Soedarso, resulted in a negative value of -0.265 which indicated that the weakness of the pharmaceutical installation in RSUD Dokter Soedarso (1,9) is higher than the strength (1.635) and the strategy to be used is by minimizing the weakness and capitalizing the opportunity of the pharmaceutical installation. Conclusion: The matrix of strategies formulated are optimization of pharmaceutical installation site, HR optimization, capitalizing on economic and demographic growth by developing a Business Strategic Plan, improving employees motivation, developing facilities and infrastructures, revising and socializing of SOP, optimizing the role of Drug and Pharmaceutical Committee, adopting Regulation No.44 of 2009 as the legal basis of pharmaceutical installation and dealing with MIS
