Daftar Isi:
- Rice straws found in farming areas are not used maximally yet at present, so that an alternative process is needed to make it tobe more useful material. One of ways in processing the straw is to make it as alternative fuel, namely, briquette. Rice straw as raw material in making a briquette isavailable abundantly, but it has low caloric value when it was burned. Thus, it needs additional material to enhance its caloric value. Coal is one of additional materials that can be used to enhance the caloric value, because it has high caloric value. In making a briquette from straw and coal mixture that is agreeing with standard, then composition and size of particle must be considered in order to produce combustion characteristics that are meeting standards of SNI 01-6235-2000 about charcoal briquette The research uses method of experiment and computer simulation. Parameters of experimental test are characteristicsof charcoal briquette consisting of water content, ash content, volatile matter content, content of bound carbon, density, caloric value and combustion rate with variety of raw material composition and particle sizes. Parameter of simulation test is temperature of combustion examined by using Fluent 3.6.2 computer software. Results of the research indicated that charcoal yields from pyrolysis process of coal and straw were 68.54% and 24.61%, respectively, whereas their caloric values were 6150.740 Cal/g and 4751.184 Cal/g. From experimental test it was obtained that optimum point of mixture composition was 50% coal and 50% straws at mesh 35. The test parameters are agreeing with SNI 01-6235-2000, namely, water content is 12.484%, caloric value is 5037.127 Cal/g, content of bound carbon is 56.105%, density is 0.743 g/cm 3 and rate of combustion is 4.14 g/min at minute 8. Results of computer simulation for combustion temperature showed that a composition consisting of 50% coal and 50% straws at mesh 35 had temperature of 743 o K or 469 o C.
