Daftar Isi:
- Variation in sounds production is common, including sounds variation in producing long-short vowel phonemes in English by Indonesians speaker who considers English as a foreign language. The variation is facilitated by phonological contrast between two languages in theory, perception and acquisition. This study is designed to describe long-short sound of English vowel in contrast of theory with Indonesian. Moreover, it is also to examine Indonesian speaker production of English long-short vowel phonemes in order to analyze perception. Finally, it attempts to explore extra-lingual factors of Indonesian speaker relates to acquisition, which encourage the production. Method applied in this research including collecting, analyzing and processing data are developed from primary data. Meanwhile, contrast in theory is derived from secondary data through library research. The primary data is time obtained from process of listening and duplicating sound of a valid instrument, which are 40 words and phrases in English. This time is considered as dependent variable. The respondents are 9 Indonesian speakers from East. Quantitative analysis is applied to calculate mean of time attained by each respondent. Using Analysis of Variance (Anova) those means are then evaluated to get comparison among samples. Qualitative analysis is applied to explain the phenomena showed by the comparison to draw conclusion about perception. Independent variable is attained from a questioner which is designed to explain extra-lingual factors of respondent in language acquisition. Comparison between two variables is identified to explain the influence independent variable toward dependent variable. Contrast in theory brings differential because English considers long-short vowel sound as phonemes, while Indonesian considers them as accent. Analysis in perception is elucidated from variation of length which is significantly showed by the value of F>Ftable. Indonesian speakers tend to lengthen the sounds, yet are able to shorthen them in frase as result of morphophonemics process. Non linguistics factors which bring impact toward native-like pronunciation are motivation to study the language as part of school curriculum and contact to both English music and movie.
