  • Background. The patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), have a higher risk of periodontal disease, including periodontitis. Periodontitis is a disease of inflammation of the tissues supporting the teeth. This inflammation is preceded by changes in the blood vessels that trigger movement of leukocytes dominated by neutrophil and neutrophils secrete Calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). The patients with uncontrolled type 2 DM have to give a treatment to eliminate the inflammation of periodontal tissues such as scaling and root planing (SRP) that a standard non-surgical therapy elimination of the all local factors causing periodontal diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of SRP to calprotectin level of GCF in periodontitis uncontrolled type 2 DM patients. Research methods. The study was conducted on 21 subjects who were collected the GCF as samples at before and after 21 days of SRP, then did examination of the Calprotectin levels using ELISA technique. The data were processed and analyzed by paired sample t-test. The results showed that statistically, there was no significant difference in the level of Calprotectin GCF between before and after 21 days of SRP in periodontitis patients with uncontrolled type 2 DM. Conclusion. The SRP had no effect on the decrease in calprotectin levels of periodontitis patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.
