  • Background. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is often found in aged men. Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is obstruction at the bladder neck. Ultrasound is one of modalities used to determine and evaluate the BOO, and one of the parameters measured is the detrusor muscle wall thickness (DWT). Intravesical prostatic protrusion is a cause of ball valve type mechanical obstruction in benign prostatic hyperplasia. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between the detrusor wall thickness of the bladder and prostatic protrusion length on transabdominal ultrasound in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Method. A cross-sectional observational study with analytical correlative association. Research process was held in March to April 2013, 36 male patients who had BPH, mean of age was 68 y.o, SD = 8,28 years, were included in this study. The variables studied were prostate volume, prostatic protrusion length and detrusor wall thickness. Result and Discussion. There was a significant positive correlation with low power correlation between detrusor wall thickness and prostate protrusion length (r= 0,341, p= 0,042, p< 0,05). A significant positive correlation with low power correlation was also observed for detrusor wall thickness and prostate volume (r= 0,330, p= 0,049, p< 0,05). Conclusion. Detrusor wall thickness had a significant positive correlation with prostatic protrusion length and prostate volume. Transabdominal ultrasound can give information about bladder outlet obstruction due to BPH.
