  • Binderless particleboard is one of an eco-friendly composite products to optimizing the large amount of bagasse waste. Recently, citric acid has been developed as natural adhesive materials to improve particleboard properties. Optimum pressing time is needed to increase the internal bond strength. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the effect of citric acid addition and pressing time on physical and mechanical properties of bagasse particleboard. This research used completely randomized design with two different factors, i.e. citric acid content (0%, 5%, and 10% based on air-dried particleâs weight) and pressing time (10 and 15 minutes). Bagasse, derived from PT. Madu Baru sugar factory Bantul Yogyakarta, was used as material in this research. Particle size which passed 10 mesh was hot pressed at temperature 200oC on spesific pressure 2 MPa and target density 0.9 g/cm3. Physical and mechanical properties of particleboard were evaluated according to JIS A 5908-2003 standard, including density, moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and internal bond strength. Data were analyzed using SPSS program and further test using HSD (Honestly Significant Difference) Tuckey test at 1% and 5% significance level. The results showed that interaction of citric acid content and pressing time only affected to thickness swelling value. Addition of citric acid content could decrease the value of moisture content, thickness swelling and water absorption. On the other hand, the value of internal bond strength and modulus elasticity was increased. The longer pressing time could decrease moisture content, thickness swelling, and water absorption value. The optimum properties were obtained from particleboard made by 10% citric acid addition for 10 minute pressing time. Those particleboard has 0.66 g/cm3 density, 4.88 % moisture content, 1.98 % thickness swelling, 29.29% water absorption, 1121 N/mm2 modulus of elasticity, 5.04 N/mm2 modulus of rupture and 0.17 N/mmÂ2 internal bonding.
