  • The bark of Rhizopora sp. was used to manufacture bark-based particleboard with organic adhesive in order to utilize an abundant bark resource for a better valueadded application. In this research, a water solution in which citric acid and sucrose were dissolved was used as an organic adhesive. A good ester linkages were linked by either the carboxyl group of citric acid and hydroxyl groups of wood components, while sucrose function was to give some addition on hydroxyl group. This research aimed to investigate effect of organic adhesive composition (citric acid and sucrose) and pressing time on physical and mechanical properties of particleboard manufactured from Rhizopora sp. bark. Waste product of Rhizopora sp. bark was obtain from PT. Bintuni Utama Wood Industry, West Papua. Bark powder then attempted under a press condition of 2000C on spesific pressure 4.7 MPa with a target density of 0.9 g/cm3. This research used completely randomized design with two different factors, including the organic adhesive composition of citric acid and sucrose (100:0, 75:25 and 25:75) and pressing time (10 and 15 minutes). The phisical and mechanical properties of those particleboard then evaluate based on JIS A 5908-2003 type 8 for particleboard. Data were analyzed using SPSS program and Honestly Significant Difference (Tuckey test at 1% and 5% significance level) for further level test. The results showed that citric acid and sucrose composition from 100:0, 75:25 and 25:75 has the highest internal bond strength (6.5 kgf/cm2) on particleboard made from 25:75 citric acid and sucrose composition for 15 minutes pressing time. Those particleboard with the same organic adhesive composition and pressing time, provide a small thickness swelling and water absorption value (2.27% and 34.9%, respectively). Based on this research, the higher sucrose addition (75%) and the longer pressing time (15 minutes) could increase physical properties and bond performance. The addition of sucrose (25:75) also provide a positive impact on modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture improvement until 26.8 times and 3.4 times higher than particleboard made from citric acid only. However, bending strength of those particleboard is generally small and need further enhancement.
