  • This paper aims to examine the relationship between openness and environmental degradation in East Asia by using model developed by Antweiler et al. (2001). Data of thirteen countries in East Asia region (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Peopleâs Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Lao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) and two types of emissions as environmental degradation approach, which are CO2 and SO2, are used in this study. Estimation result shows that in the CO2 approach model, scaletechnique effect of openness has statistically significant negative relationship with environmental degradation, whereas the composition effect shows positive one. The estimation result in the SO2 approach model, on the other hand, shows statistically weak relationship between openness and environmental degradation for the case of East Asia countries.
