  • Settlements and communities around Gendol River and Opak River are an element at risk hazard of material runoff lahar flood from Merapi Volcano, therefore it needs anticipation effort to minimize the impact of such disasters occurrence. The purpose of this study is a visual interpretation and mapping of existing settlements based on GeoEye Imagery as a process for processing and determining the prone area and not prone area hazardâ��s overflow of material runoff from Gendol River flow and Opak River in Argomulyo Village, assess the Community Preparedness Index to the danger hazardâ��s overflow of material runoff from Gendol River and Opak River in each Subvillages in Argomulyo based on implementation review of The Rural Disaster Information System, and evaluate the effectivenessâ��s implementation of the Rural Disaster Information System in each subvillages in Argomulyo to improve preparedness as anticipatory measures in disaster risk reduction to the material runoff of lahar flood. The method used in this study was a visual interpretation of GeoEye Imagery for mapping of existing settlement, mapping of material runoff lahar flood, and zoning of existing settlement vulnerability to hazards of material runoff lahar flood. Research questionnaires and in depth interviews with respondents was conducted to assess community preparedness in Argomulyo Village. The Effectiveness of Rural Disaster Information System Program wasevaluated based on the socialization and training of disaster management and the effectiveness of Early Warning Systems based on short messaging service that has been done in Argomulyo Village. The result of research showed that GeoEye imagery is very good used for land use mapping with interpretation accuracy 97.3%. Many Subvillages in Argomulyo are in range score between 65-100 of its Subvillage Index, it means that community of subvillages was ready - so ready to face the hazard of material runoff lahar flood. The socialization and disaster management training are effective - very effectively that made community of vulnerable Subvillages that have exposed to the material runoff of lahar flood become equipped to handle the threat of material runoff lahar flood, but it is not effective for the people who live in Subvillages that are not prone to the hazard of material runoff lahar flood. Early Warning System based on short message service in used is less effective at community level because it was impractical and could not be understood by the local people in Argomulyo Village.
