  • Given the geological conditions of Padang who are in areas prone to disasters especially earthquake and tsunami, it takes resilience and efforts to increase the preparedness of each community to disaster risk. Education is one of the strategic sectors to achieve disasters preparedness community. Integration through formal education curriculum, developing local curriculum. School is very important to be managed as a means to raise awareness for the disaster risk reduction community. The integration policy with the participation of the public society regarding disaster risk is needed as one of the criterion in view of the ability of an area to reduce the risk This study aims to determine the policy efforts being made to improve the preparedness of schools in reducing the disaster risk of earthquake and tsunami in Padang. This research was conducted with descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data used in this study is primary data obtained through interviews and secondary data obtained through observation and library research by collecting data relevant to the research themes. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques. The results of this study indicate that, existing schools can be said to be prepared with a disaster, but the majority of schools surveyed do not meet all the requirements to be regarded as school disaster preparedness. Not all the disaster preparedness have formed in the school community, not routine implementation of disaster simulations, and differences in the implementation strategies of integration into the education system. It is not in spite of the lack of resources and lack of support from the local government to improve the disaster preparedness of the school community. Paradigm local government of Padang, still focused on mitigating structural, non-structural mitigation measures should be parallel with structural mitigation efforts to get a resilience school communities to disasters. Based on these results, it is recommended that the local government of Padang increase commitment to improve preparedness, should formulate a policy that technically regulate the implementation of local curriculum of disaster preparedness education, by forming a task force to analyze and prepare the implementation of local curriculum of disaster preparedness requirement coordination with related parties.
