- This research aims to find how far the efforts in the documentation of Java traditional Culture done by community and the Government of Surakarta in relation to cultural assets preservation and development of cultural tourism as well as to know how far the traditional culture of Java documentation can serve as public information and become a reference library to enrich the cultural library. This research uses qualitative approach with the case study technique. The collection of data obtained through observation, interviews, document studies, as well as archive footage from other physical devices. Informants in this study are the Department of Culture and Tourism, Department of Communication and Information, Bapeda, the maintainer of the Bale, and also Sudjatmoko, the community representative. For the data analysis, the research uses triangulation of sources. The result of the research is that the efforts of traditional culture documentation taken by community is personal, related with which work field they are in, the documentation is not structural and not following the documentations rule, and also the documentations is done only to support their work. The Government of Surakarta is already carrying out an inventory and documenting of traditional Javanese culture though still does not have the law that set it up yet. �Perda Heritage� that manages the inventory and documentation, preservation and management of cultural assets, as well as the development of traditional cultural assets has still not been passed by parliament (DPRD) by now. The Java traditional culture documentation effort taken by the Government is through the instructions of the Mayor of Surakarta by forming inventory and ocumentation special teams that consists of the elements from the related department. In some of its policies, the Government is positioning itself as a regulator and facilitator. The Government of Surakarta publishes and communicates the information to the public in accordance with the culture that was mandated in The Disclosure of Public Information Act with the aim to arouse the community and involve the community in maintaining and preserving traditional cultural assets. The arrangement of the culture library as the product of cultural documentation activities performed either personally by the public, Government, cultural communities, as well as by the library, documentation centre and cultural institutions in Surakarta as part of the dissemination of cultural information.
