  • Yogyakarta is a city which has many predicates, one of them is called the city of students. The symbol that does show the presence of education is the oldest and the most prestigious state university namely Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Varied colleges in Yogyakarta have invited many students which increase diversity of castes as urban community. Social interaction in this community is heterogeneous in which it affects kinds of â��placeâ�� made by people and affected by variousenvironmental aspects of city. One of the tendencies of urban community activities is the necessity of sharing experience and getting comfortable place to socialize. People do those activities outside home, in the office, and the third place (Oldenburg, 1999). Ray Oldenburg describes the function of the third place that exists when there is an inadequacy of the first and second place. The objectives of this research were to know the distribution pattern, typology, and to figure out concept of student third place in the area of Gadjah Mada University. The existence of the third place which is based on theory of Ray Oldenburg is spread and easily found around the college (UGM). However, could this place accommodates the activities, attributes, and is appropriate for students? This was the reason of conducting the research about the third place for student. The areas chosen for this research were nearby UGM campus in which the presence of instalment houses are high and occupied by UGM students. The areas were: 1) Pogung, 2) Karang, 3) Karangmalang, 4) Sendowo and Blimbingsari. Methodology used in this research was Grounded Theory. It was to get the basis theory. Data were collected by observation which was to know the distribution pattern and typology, questionnaires and interview to figure out the concept of student third place. The findings show that the distribution design of place which is potential as the third place has two patterns, they are linier which is along the way and spread pattern in which instalment houses dominate. Typology of student third place is almost open plan. The concept got can be classified as academics concept to accommodate student teaching learning activities and entertaining concept to cover the need of refreshment after doing activities.
