- It is ackowledged that population growth and changing consumption patterns or lifestyles of people have led to increasing amount of waste and diversity in waste characteristics. Traditional markets are one of the main sources of municipal solid waste generation within the city. This leads to many problems faced by the traditional markets related to the increasing volume of solid waste. Giving an alternative solution, the Danamon Bank and the local government build a cooperation dealing with market waste, namely the Go Green project which converts organic waste in traditional markets into high quality compost. This research try to answer the whole marks which deals with to what extent did the public and private sector cooperate during the establishment of the Go Green Project? What problems were faced with market waste management in Tanjungbalai before the start of the Go Green project? What type of institutional arrangement has been set up for the project? How will the level of cooperation likely affect the sustainability of the project in the future? Answering these, the data were collected using semi-structured interviews and observations, and were analyzed based on data triangulation between the perception of different key respondents. In general, when doing research, it was found several problems related to waste management in traditional market that leads to the cooperation between public and private sector. Based on the relevant studies reviewed, environmental, political, socio-cultural, technical, financial and organizational problems are the most important keys to be solved towards an integrated and sustainable solid waste management in the city. Cooperation between public and private sectors often comes as a result of government inability to provide public service effectively and efficiently that leads to dissatisfaction of public with the quality of the services. Public private cooperation were defined as social cooperation that happens voluntarily between actors (public and private sector) to work together in achieving joint objectives for effective and efficient public service delivery. Defining the form of public and private sector cooperation, this research found that the form of the cooperation is sponsoring and co-financing relationship. Unfortunately, the Go Green project as the form of cooperation between the local government of Tanjungbalai City and the Danamon Bank is categorized not success which is indicated by several factors as explained further. To this end, it recommends the political will from the local government and the need of project evaluation regularly.
