  • The expansive soil is a term generally applied to any soil that has a potential for shrinking or swelling under changing moisture condition. The dry soil can swell bigger in short period of time if sunken comparing with the soil that is already wet. This research is aimed to find out the swelling strain and swelling pressure and to find out the influence of soil dry density on the maximum swelling time of expansive soil. The soil tested were taken from Sokoo Village, Ngawi Regency, East Java Province. The swelling test were performed using Oedometer apparatus by applying overburden pressure 6,9 kPa. Dry densitis of soil sample were about Î3d = 1,471 gr/cmÂ3 until Î3d = 0,962 gr/cm3, the initial moisture contents were varied about 15,04 % until 42,88 %. The testing results show that the clay can be clasified as CH/A-7-5 with high swelling potential. The soil with dry density Î3d = 1,471 gr/cmÂ3 and the initial moisture content of 15,04 % has maximum swelling strain of 38,13 % with swelling pressure of 2392 kPa. Meanwhile, the soil having dry density Î3d = 0,962 gr/cmÂ3 and initial moisture content of 42,88 % with minimum swelling strain of 1.68 % has the swelling pressure of 34,22 kPa. The time needed for the swelling strain maximum is about 16 days in the dry density Î3d = 1,471 gr/cmÂ3, while the minimum time needed for the maximum swelling is about 5 days in the dry density Î3d = 0,962 gr/cmÂ3. The soil with higher density needs longer swelling time.
