- In Ortodontics slidi ng mechanics is a method used to move teeth. During sliding mechanics, friction may disturbs tooth movements. Friction is a resistance to object movement against with another object. Clinically, orthodontic force has to overcome friction to obtain optimum tooth movement. The purpose of this study is to compare friction between Begg brackets and self ligating brackets which are divided into active self ligating and passive self ligating using 0.016 inch stainless steel arch wire. Begg brackets has vertical slots and using pins as their ligation system, Begg has little friction and narrow mesio-distal bracket width. Self ligating brackets do not need any pins, ligatures either power ring or stainless steel resulting less in friction. Begg brackets, active self ligating brackets In-Ovation, and passive self ligating brackets Damon Quantum (Q) are randomly picked and used in this study and they are divided into into 3 groups: Group A (Begg brackets), group B (In- Ovation brackets), group C (Damon Q brackets). Each group using 10 lower anterior brackets and Universal Testing Machine was used to measure friction. This study was analyzed using Anova test continued with LSD. The result showed that there are influence in friction comparison (p<0.05) between Begg, In-Ovation, and Damon Q brackets. Mean square friction in Begg brackets 0.516 kg is the largest compare to mean square In-Ovation brackets 0.337 kg and mean square Damon Q brackets 0.249 kg which is least.
