- Job as security guard occupied by the Javanese women signifies theshifting in women's role from domestic work into public one. Work is physical and mental activity performed by women to achieve life goals, which is interpreted as an attempt to meet economic needs, social needs, as well as fulfilling the needs for self-esteem and as a means of self-actualization. This study set out from the researcher's curiosity to the phenomenon of women working as security guards, a job used to be occupied only by men. Therefore, phenomenological qualitative method was used. The data was collected by interview (in depth interview) and observation. The number of respondent in this study were five persons (two persons working as a security guard at a dormitory, one as a security guard at a mall, and the other two worked in a cigarette factory). The result showed that the meaning of work for Javanese women is inseparable from social meaning, economic meaning, and self-existence aspect. Female security guards desire recognition not only in domestic sector and traditional role, but also in their capability as working partner for their husbands.
