  • Publishing and printing industry has been growing rapidly in recent years. One of the reasons is caused by the system of local and national elections transformed by democratic and liberal methods for citizen to choose their own decisions. Hence, the need to convey the message of each candidate expressed largely through the media, especially printed media. Nevertheless, not all embroiled firms gain a significant advantage. PT Duta Aksara Mulia is a publishing and printing firms who started the activities with social-oriented. Then, the firm develops to apply true business concepts that should be completed long ago and begins transformed into a profit-oriented company. This study was then conducted in order (1) to identify PT Duta Aksara Muliaâ��s activity described in relation to their vision, mission, and strategy, and (2) to assess possible strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and source of competitive advantage that the firm compete in order to craft alternative strategy to cope with situational changes of the industry. The research method conducted was a descriptive approach. To gather the needed data, an Individual Depth Interview was carried out toward the GM of the firm. This study applied several tool analysis: External Analysis which is consisted of Broad Environment and Competitive Analysis, SWOT Analysis, Resource-based View Analysis, and VRIO Analysis. The results provided that competitive pressures that come from bargaining power of the suppliers is strong enough, bargaining power of the customers is strong, new entrantâ��s threat is weak, threat of substitute products is moderate to normal, and rivalry between existing firms is considered as weak. From the macro business conditions, the PT Duta Aksara Mulia faces serious challenges mainly come from the raw material providers. In addition, the finest asset and strength that most other firms do not have is a tangible asset which comprised of (1) financial condition, (2) magnificent and strategic offices, (3) production facilities, and (4) firmâ��s branch offices. However, despite this asset is classified as sustainable distinctive competence, the firm still has not been able to organize into an appropriate asset. In other words, PT Duta Aksara Mulia has to recognize certain things that have not been appropriate about the mission, vision, and strategy, and also aware of the available macro business conditions. Moreover, by this research, the firm has more references of what should be done to the firmâ��s assets that might be a source of sustained competitive advantage as well as identifying and assessing strategies to other resources that might be upgraded to be an important asset for the firm.
