- Periodontitis is an inflammatory response on periodontal tissue that caused by infection from accumulation of bacterial plaque. Treatment of periodontitis is elimination of local factors and often need to flap surgery. Hypertension is defined as an increase in systolic blood pressure more than 140mmHg and diastolic blood pressure more than 90mmHg. Complications of hypertension when performed surgical therapy is bleeding which difficult to stop. Patient with hypertension need an alternative strategy before treatment interventions. Pure honey has antibacterial capability that is effective against pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the application of pure honey to decrease anaerobic bacterial colonies gingival crevicular fluid in periodontitis patients with hypertension. The study subjects were severe periodontitis patients with hypertension. There were two groups of the study, first group was application of pure honey and second group was applications of metronidazole gel as a positive control with each group consisting of 10 teeth with periodontal pocket >6mm. Data retrieval colony count of anaerobic bacteria gingival sulcus fluid performed on days 1st, 7th, and 21st. Data were analyzed with mixed design anova with 95% significance. The statistic results showed decrease of anaerobic bacteria colonies gingival crevicular fluid in periodontitis patients with hypertension were significant (p <0.05) based on the day of observation, while based on the treatment group showed there was no significant difference (p> 0.05). Application of pure honey in reducing anaerobic bacteria colonies gingival crevicular fluid in periodontitis patients with hypertension as effective as metronidazole gel as gold standard. The conclusion of this study was the application of pure honey was effective in reducing anaerobic bacteria colonies gingival crevicular fluid in periodontitis patients with hypertension.
