  • The aim of this study was to investigate the difference of shear bond strength of composite resin on dentin using total etch bonding and self etch bonding with or without chlorhexidine digluconate application. Twenty human upper premolars were used in this study. The teeth were prepared and fixed in self cure acrylic resin, then the subjects were divided into 4 groups consisting of 5 subjects each. Subjects in group IA were filled with composite resin using total etch bonding, subjects in group IB were filled with composite resin using total etch bonding with chlorhexidine digluconate application, subjects in group IIA were filled with composite resin using self etch bonding, and subjects in group IIB were filled with composite resin using self etch bonding with chlorhexidine digluconate application. All subjects were stored in distilled water for 24 hours. The subjects underwent a thermocycling procedure at 4oC and 55oC consisting of 25 cycles, then the subjects were dried and the shear bond strengths were measured using universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and LSD test. The means and standard deviations of the shear bond strength of group IA was 2,19+0,63 Mpa, group IB was 2,80+0,62 Mpa, group IIA was 2,77+0,44 Mpa, and group IIB was 1,91+1,03. Analysis of data with two-way ANOVA showed that bonding system, chlorhexidine digluconate application and interaction of bonding system and chlorhexidine digluconate influence the shear bond strength of composite on dentin (p<0,05). Analysis of data using LSD demonstrated the shear bond strength of composite resin on dentin using total etch bonding with or without chlorhexidine digluconate and using self etch bonding without chlorhexidine digluconate application had a significant differences with the group using self etch bonding with chlorhexidine digluconate application (p<0,05). The conclusion of this study was the shear bond strength of composite resin on dentin using total etch bonding with or without chlorhexidine digluconate application and using self etch bonding without chlorhexidine digluconate application are different with ones using self etch bonding with chlorhexidine digluconate application.
