- After the fall of the New Order regime, the national political constellation has changed. This situation has given impact to the dynamics of local politics. Papua has undergone such a situation. The government has established special autonomy in Papua as a kind of political compromise upon demands from the Independent Papua Movement. However, the implementation of special autonomy in Papua has resulted in complex problems, which are related to the notion of ethnocentrism and the politics of representation among Papuan elites. This study is aimed to examine how ethnocentrism and politics of representation take place in Papua during the implementation of special autonomy. The result of the study demonstrates that ethnocentrism is getting stronger in Papua, especially in the political field, bureacracy and social field. In the political field, ethnocentrism has been indicated in the dynamics of political parties, particularly during the local political elections. In bureaucracy, ethnocentrism has taken a form in the Papuanization of bureacracy, which previously had been dominated by non-Papuan resources. In the social field, ethnocentrism can be indicated through the dichotomy of Papuan image, namely Papua Daratan versus Papua Gunung. Such dichotomy has been used and exploited by local political elites to win political struggle such as local political elections. Politics of representation has been undertaken through political language game among local elites. In disguise of representing the grass-root, those elites actually struggle to win their own interests.
