- Kampoeng Batik Laweyan is a cultural preserve in Surakarta which has not only tangible but also intangible cultural heritage wealth. Worrying about the extinction of the cultural heritage has encouraged some local public figures to strive for conservation action. This conservation will not work without people�s participation. Therefore, they asked people in Kampoeng Laweyan to develop their home living to become a tourism spot. They thought that tourism development could increase people�s economical condition and make cultural heritage into tourism asset. Thus, the purpose of conservation and the increase people income will be attained. The objective of this study is to search people action in the cultural preserve in responding the tourism development by opening batik showrooms. This study uses ethnography method. Data collecting was done by literature, interviewing, observing, and documentation. The collecting data was explained analytic descriptively, in the way of reduction, classification, verification, and conclusion. The result of this study shows that people in Laweyan open showrooms in responding towards the tourism development as an effort to conserve the cultural preserve. Showrooms become the places to show batiks and handicrafts produced by people in Laweyan making use of their houses or building new ones. Showrooms as a tourism attraction in Kampoeng Batik Laweyan were divided into small, medium and large showrooms. Some of them combined showrooms with arts into art galleries. The threat towards the conservation happens due to heir falling, new arrivals and investors.
