  • Subdistrict of Kuala Jambi is located in East Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi Province. Subdistrict of Kuala Jambi traversed by the Batanghari River is the longest river on the island of Sumatra and empties in the Subdistrict of Kuala Jambi. Settlements are located along the river is slowly considered a problem for environmental sustainability. The dilemma that happened was on one side of the river flood plain is a protected area that serves to provide local protection is intended to provide protection to the surrounding region to maintain the protective function and preservation of the natural resources surrounding region. On the other side of the flood plains is an area that for some people regarded as a decent place to live. For the people of Subdistrict of Kuala Jambi, particularly those living on the banks of the river, existence of the river is very important to their lives. Research conducted in the village of Tanjung Solok, village of Teluk Majelis and Village of Majelis Hidayah subdistrict of Kuala Jambi is a qualitative descriptive study that aims to explore and describe the concept of settlement on the banks of the River Batanghari. The research method used in this study is based on phenomenology. Data was collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis using descriptive qualitative method of analysis, the analytical approach using observer perspective as the main analytical tool. At first the people living in the mainland area (trenches), but they began to move slowly settled into the river. The factors that cause people to move live to the edge of the river are: 1). To get the smooth transportation, which was once the only access is via the river transportation, 2). The desire to earn additional income, ie as a fisherman and as a trader, 3). The desire for security, which was formerly in the mainland many robbery. This study concludes that there are three (3) concepts formed settlements of the themes of research findings, namely: 1). The concept of easy access to transport, 2). The concept of kinship proximity, 3). The concept of proximity to job sites. The themes of the research findings that build concepts are: the layout and orientation of the building, the condition of buildings, land tenure, infrastructure, economic and kinship.
