  • Background: Chronic Rhinosinusitis is a chronic inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses, which one of several cause is due to damage of ciliary function.Mucociliary hygiene system which consist of cilia and mucus blanket as a local defense of the nose and paranasal sinuses depends on mucociliary transport. mucociliary transport can be assessed by measuring the time of MCT using the saccharin test. Symptoms and signs of the CRS as Task Force criteria 1996 can be used for diagnosis and evaluation of therapy Purpose : To determine the correlation between clinical symptoms : nasal congestion, facial pain, runny nose and smelling disorders in patients with MCT time on CRS patient. Methods: Cross sectional Procedures: clinical symptom score was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS), a measuring instrument with scale 0-10. MCT time measured with saccharin test. saccharin particle with size 0.5-1 mm placed at the front end of the inferior turbinate, then the time measured until the sweetness tasted in the throat in minutes Statistical analysis: correlation test of clinical symptom with MCT time using Spearman's correlation test. Independent sample t-test was used for the analysis of the mean MCT time difference with variables of gender, medical history and smoking history Results: the number of samples as many as 54 people CRS. We found significant correlation (p <0.05) between clinical symptoms consisting of nasal congestion and facial pain with mucociliary transport time, the correlation is 0.455 and 0.252, while the correlation was not significant (p> 0.05) between clinical symptoms consisting of a runny nose and smelling disorders with mucociliary transport time, the correlation is equal to -0.029 and 0.113 Conclusion: there is a positive correlation between the clinical symptoms of nasal congestion, facial pain and smelling disorders with nasal MCT time on CRS. The negative correlation between runny nose with nasal MCT on CRS.
