- The release of curcumin from N-dodecyl chitosan films (NDKit) had been studied in comparison to the release from the films of chitosan (Kit) and Kit-NDKit blend (1:1). The aim of this study was to determine whether the film based NDKit has better capability on loading of curcumin and release the loaded-curcumin more slowly than chitosan-based films. NDKit was synthesized from chitosan with dodecyl bromide under alkaline KOH at 70 ° C for 24 hours. Synthesis results characterized by FTIR, 13C NMR and XRD. The study includes the optimization of loading time and then release curcumin curcumin in physiological pH (pH = 7) was observed at various time intervals. Concentration of released curcumin was then modeled as a function of time for several pharmacokinetic models i.e. models of zero order, first order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell and Korsmeyer-Peppas. Characterization NDKit showed that the degree of alkylation of chitosan obtained was 7.67%. Loading of curcumin on the three types of films was optimum at 4 hours. NDKit film has better capability for loading of curcumin (680.24 mg/g) than the Kit film (383.92 mg/g). The release of curcumin on the NDKit film was in slower rate (-9.93 mol/second) than the release from Kit film (-9.49 mol/second). Pharmacokinetic modeling results indicated that at the physiological condition of NDKit is a good candidate for a curcumin drug transport material
