  • The clay which has capability of swelling and shrinking in very high limit is called as expansive soil. It is caused by continuously change of water content. Capability of very high swell-shrink will promote damage due to unbearable deformation from upper structure building. To solve the expansive soil problem, soil must be given special treatment to increase stability, soil strength and reduce swelling potential. The soil samples were taken from Soko Ngawi, East Java. In this research, chemical stabilization is conducted by add lime as additive agent. The percentage variation of soil and lime mixture namely 0%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% from soil dry weight. The research evaluation is soil strength increasment with unconfined compression test and swelling potential with oedometer test instrument. From the research has gained result that lime as additive agent able to decrease plasticity index value significantly from 75,16% to 28,81%. Mean while continuous lime addition with many variation will not significantly affect to plasticity index value reducement. The increasement of soil lime mixture strength result continuously due to addition of mixture period. At 28 days of mixture period, soil strength increase from 444,90 kPa to 858,55 kPa and significantly increase from the initial lime addition till 12% of lime level. The original soil swelling potential reduce optimally at lime addition 8% and 10%, swelling potential reduce from 17,63% to 2,06% and 0,72% at initial mixing. When mixing period is conducted within 14 days, swelling potential reduce from 1,34% and 0,60%. Swelling pressure has similar behaviour with swelling potential. Swelling pressure of original soil from 475,22 kPa reduce to 255,02 kPa and 34,33 kPa and when sample mixture period is given, pressure reduce from 118,26 kPa and 31,85 kPa. With addition of lime, soil expansive degree becoming low.
