  • Discourse on the transnational Islamic movements in Indonesia was beginning to rise in the early of nineties, the discourse emerged due to the many of Indonesian Muslims united with the community. Campuses and mosques became the center of activity of the transnational Islamic movements. The educated and literate become their recruitment targets. One of the Islamic movement in Indonesia called as part of the transnational Islamic movement is the salafi movement, which is representative of the Wahabi movement in Saudi Arabia. This movement has mission to restore the people to the Al-Quran and Sunnah with their action to eradicate all forms of idolatry, myth, heresy, and superstition. Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab, as the founder of Wahhabi movement has a major influence to development of this concept throughout the world including in Indonesia. As written in the book entitled "The Wahhabi Movement in Indonesia Dialogue and criticism" by Muhammad Najib, as well as Deliar Noer wrote in the book "Modern Islamic Movement in Indonesia". Because there is many Indonesian students studying in the Middle East then imprinted (tersibghoh) by the concept (fikroh), so after returning to Indonesia they also took part at spreading the ideology. Although Muhammadiyah have same mission in calling the people back to the Al-Quran and Sunnah and also eradicates idolatry, myth, heresy and superstition but not called as part of the transnational Islamic movement, even gradually the claim that Muhammadiyah is Wahabi increasingly fading with the emergence of the salafi movement in Indonesia. Because the real influence of the thought of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahab to Muhamamdiyah is not straightforward. Since the inspiration for KH. Ahmad Dahlan at the time is Rasyid Ridha thoughts manifested in article forms in the Al-Manaar magazine. Thus here it can be understood that Wahabi, Salafi and Muhammadiyah is something different. There is no direct influence of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahabâs thought to Muhammadiyah.
