  • Background: The Province of Papua ranked the first in 2009 at the prevalence of 133.70 and in 2010 the prevalence increased to 173.69. District of Biak Numfor is a city offering entertainment service such as karaoke, café, massage parlors, localization, and street commercial sex workers are mushrooming. The condition is assumed to contribute the growth of HIV/AIDS. Cases of HIV/AIDS in housewives at Biak Numfor are very high, as many as 150 from the total of 580 cases. Objective: To study the attitude and role of Biak women in the prevention of HIV/AIDS through the strategy of health promotion in housewives at Biak Numfor, Papua. Method: This study used qualitative method. There were 23 informant, all of them were Biak women, comprising of 12 housewives, 6 tribal leaders, religious leaders, women activists, and 5 key informant. Data were obtained through indepth interview and focus group discussion. Result: Biak women understood that HIV/AIDS was a dangerous disease for everybody that definitely caused deaths. HIV/AIDS could infect all age groups both male and female. Biak women felt they were susceptible to HIV/AIDS through their husband. On the other hand dowry cultural system put Biak women at weak bargaining position. Role of Biak women as binsyowi, mananwir had a very strategic position in the prevention of HIV/AIDS
