- Men who have sex with men commonly practice oro-genital and oro-anal sexual intercourse. Sexual behaviour at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including sexual experience and activity, age at sexual debut, current and lifetime number of sex partners, frequency of sexual intercourse, and types of sexual practice. Gonorrhea infection is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae that attached limited to mucosal surfaces lined by columnar epithelium cell, one of which is the pharyngeal mucous. Studies in correlation of sexual behaviour and pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence in MSM have not been done in Indonesia. To find out the prevalence of pharyngeal gonorrhea and to determine the correlation of sexual behaviour and pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence in MSM. Subjects in this cross-sectional study were MSM Vesta community Yogyakarta. Sample was determined by consecutive sampling. Pharyngeal gonorrhea is confirmed by positive culture of N. gonorrhoeae on Thayer-Martin media. Sexual behaviors was assessed with questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed with chi-square test and logistic regression test. Study sample consisted of 92 LSL, the highest distribution in the range of 20-29 years old, and the mean age at first sexual intercourse was19 years old. The mean number of sexual partners was 2 persons, 6.5% were bisexual. The mean frequency of sexual intercourse was 2 times/week, 27.2% have had oro-anal sexual intercourse, 75% of couples used condoms inconsistently and 16.3% had been behaving sell and/or buying sex. Pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence was 4.3%. Chi-square test showed no significant correlation between sexual behaviour and pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence, so that multivariate analysis was not done. Pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence of 4.3%. There was no correlation between sexual behaviour and pharyngeal gonorrhea prevalence in MSM Vesta community in Yogyakarta.
