  • The preparation of octadecylsilica (ODS) by the grafting method as stationary phase of cromatography column has been investigated. The stationary phase was used to simulate the separation of a mixture containing benzene, toluene, naphthalene, and to determine the concentration of ascorbic acid in soft drinks. This study began with the activation of silica gel using 20% HCl (v/v). Calcination was performed at 200, 300, 400 and 450 °C for 4 hours followed by modification with n-octadecyltriethoxysilane (ODTS) as bonded phase. Characterization of ODS showed a decrease in surface area, pore volume, pore radius. Strong infrared absorption at 2931.80 cm-1 and 2854.65 cm-1 indicates asymmetric and symmetric streching vibrations of methylene group, respectively. The optimum conditions obtained by calcination 300 °C with surface area, pore volume and pore radius of 281.82 m2/g
