- Expansive soil is one of the problems in construction planning due to its significant swelling-shrinking characteristic caused by the fluctuation water concentration. Expansive soil swells in rainy season and shrinks in dry season. Other than water concentration, the swelling of expansive soil is also likely to be influenced by the area width and the thickness of the expansive soil zone. The objective of this study is to identify and classify clay soil in Soko Village-Ngawi Jawa Timur, to identify the swelling potential within various dimensions of the soil specimen and to understand the influence of the specimen dimensions to the swelling potential. The swelling test used the remolded clay and was carried out in The Soil Mechanic Laboratory of FT UGM by using the Oedometer and Rowe cell instruments. Initial water concentrations were determined as 20%, 25%, and 30% within dry volume variations of 1.20 gr/cm3
