- Self-esteem has been identified as crucial psychological parameter in adolescents development. Nevertheless, there are many inconsistent findings of researches on adolescents self-esteem development. Among various factors that affect self-esteem, attachment has been identified to be one of significant factors, especially in the context of current family structure development. Single parent families have increased significantly nowadays. Attachment of adolescents, especially with the non-custodial parent, is in jeopardy. This research was aiming at sharpening research findings on adolescents selfesteem in relation to attachment with their mother, father, and peer, by involving family structure as moderating variable. Subjects of this research were students from grade 11 and 12 of SMKN 2 Depok and SMKN 6 in Yogyakarta, both males and females. Thirty-seven subjects were from intact families and 41 subjects were from single parent families due to separation or divorce. Hierarchical multiple regression and Moderating Regrassion Analysis are used in its attempt to analyze the relationship of attachment with self-esteem in respect of family structure as moderating variable. The results suggest that attachment to mother, father, and peer significantly predicts self-esteem as dependent variable. Interesting finding of this research showed that both attachment to father and attachment to peer are stronger predictors to self-esteem compared to attachment to mother. Further analysis showed that family structure was not a moderating variable towards the relationship between attachment (to mother and father) and self-esteem. Additional regression analysis carried out separately on subjects from intact and non-intact families also showed similar results. Results from independent-sample t test, additional analysis carried out in order to sharpen the findings of the research, showed similar results from multiple regression analysis. Family structure has no affect on selfesteem, so is gender. Meanwhile, only attachment to father is significantly differ between groups of subject from intact and non-intact families. Attachment to mother only has moderate effect size between female and male subjects. Level of attachment to mothers on female subjects are slightly higher than males.
