- The war verses are considered as a tool of legitimacy for the use of violence in the name of religion recently. The aim of this study is to interpret the war verses by basing them on the peaceful Islamic teaching. Interpretation method used here is the theory of communicative action developed by Jurgen Habermas. This study addresses, (1)the theory of communicative action developed by Habermas, (2) the historical aspect of the war verses (3) the problem existing in the war verses and (4) the application of the theory of communicative action in the interpretation of the war verses. This study uses depth-hermeneutic method developed by Hebermas in theory of communicative action. Depth-hermeneutic is a text analyzing method by exposing the distorted expressions in the process of interaction due to social censorship. Habermas used the method to achieve mutual understanding and intersubjectivity between human and society. War verses can not be separated from socio-historical aspects of the Muslims at that time. The realities of war in Islam do not meat that Islam has betrayed its fundamental teachings based on love and peace. In war verses, it is loaded with the value of compassion an intersubjectivity as well. War verses are the only solution for Muslims to survive in a social system that existed at that time in the Arab society, even though the content of existing law under subsection war can not be applied indiscrimately in all condition.
