- A label of identity will always stick to anything in the world including mankind. A label of identity in mankind is proper name showing themselves as an individual which later on reflects the identity of bigger groups such as ethnic group. The label of this cultural identity also works on all ethnic groups including Chinese in Pontianak. The proper name of the Chinese not only shows the personal and ethnic identity, but also shows the family identity. However, today the use of the proper name creates two posibilities, i.e. (1) it stays the same and (2) it may shift. This writing is based on the data of Chinese proper name taken from Population and the Civil Registry Service in Pontianak and Obituary in newspaper Ap Post. The data are collected through method of listening with taping technique. To analyze the data, the written data are discussed using extralingual comparative method. Meanwhile, the interview data are analyzed in the form of classification and cultural theme. Finally, the analysis result is presented in the form of classification table (formal method) and using words (informal method). Chinese community in Pontianak uses the proper name that are classified into four types, i.e. using Chinese name, Indonesian name, European/American name, and alias. From those four types, Chinese names are the most common one used for those who are born before 1920s up to 1969. Whereas, from 1970 to 1980s, Indonesian names are the most commonly used. Yet, a change takes places again from 1990s until todal when European/American names are widely used. The use of the names is followed by the use of semantic element concept that parallels with the cultural concept which the names derive. Generally, the Chinese community begins to change the proper name form different from their own cultural concept. What is unique is that the change still reflects their Chinese name by using family and generation elements in the new concept.
