- Most of the areas in Indonesia are vulnerable for earthquake hazard. The frequency of earthquake in Indonesia is very high with the largest number of damages on structure walls. In general, the structure materials used for walls are composed of clay bricks. One of their weaknesses is the quite significant dead load on the structure. The production of clay bricks also brings negative effect such as productive land reduction. Based on these reasons, it is required to obtain substituting material which is light for wall and environmental friendly. The making of lightweight concrete from polystyrene waste is of one the efforts in utilizing the waste. Having the unit weight of about 13-15 kg/m3, Polystyrene is considered very light. By giving wiremesh into the layer, it is expected to provide reinforcement to the wall. This research of polystyrene concrete wall panel used specimens in 900 mm height, 300 mm width and 80 mm thickness with wiremesh reinforcement on both sides and 12 cube specimens in 150 x 150 mm dimensions. The panel specimens consisted of: 6 panels with wiremesh reinforcement in 0,6 mm diameter with 2 variations of sand composition (15% and 0%), and 6 panels with wiremesh reinforcement in 0,8 mm diameter with 2 variations of sand composition (15% and 0%). The tests given were flexural test, compressive test and water concentration test. Cube specimens were consisted of 6 polystyrene cubes in 15% sand and 6 polystyrene cubes in 0% sand. The tests given to the cube specimens included the compressive test and water absorbency tests. Results of this study show that polystyrene concrete with 15% sand give higher compressive value and elasticity modulus but lower water absorbency in compare to polystyrene concrete with 0% sand. The compressive strength, weight of content, elasticity modulus and water absorbency are 1.15 MPa, 969.83 kg/m3, 189.97 MPa, and 16.50%, respectively. The polystyrene lightweight concrete with 15% sand and wiremesh 0,8 mm indicate the highest compressive strength of 1.39 MPa and the highest flexural strength of 0.79 MPa. The polystyrene lightweight concrete with 15% sand with 0.6 mm wiremesh reinforcement show the largest weight of content of 970.36 kg/m3. The polystyrene concrete with 0% sand and wiremesh reinforcement of 0.8 mm indicate the lowest water concentration of 9.2%. Results of this study show that by giving wiremesh reinforcement in 0.6 mm diameter to the concrete panel, it become more brittle and with higher water concentration in compare to by giving 0.8 diameter wiremesh reinforcement. Sand adition give better result than without sand. High compression do not ensure to yield high specific gravity and compressive strength.
