  • Retinal hard exudates is one of the clinical sign of diabetic retinopathy that could be found whether in nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Hard exudates (HE) was a deposit of lipid in retina derived from plasma lipoprotein exudation. Hard exudates could be placed in the the other site not only in the macula. Elevated lipid serum concentration (dyslipidemia) had worsen this disorder presumably. To evaluated the relationship between dyslipidemia and retinal hard exudates in patient with diabetic retinopathy. This is a cross sectional study. There were 73 diabetic retinopathy in type II diabetes mellitus patients (73 eyes) that had not been performed any retinal photocoagulation yet. Fundus photograph examination in 7 field of the retina with 450 angle was performed and retinal hard exudates were counted with the DR Grid/Graticle. In these patients the retinal hard exudates were divide into three groups : Group I (hard exudates < 1 disc diameter), Group II (hard exudates 1 â 2.99 disc diameter) and Group III (hard exudates > 3 disc diameter). Laboratory examination includes total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyseride and blood glucose). Mean of hard exudates (HE) in dyslipidemia group was 3143,5 ± 5251x104Î1⁄4m2 and non dyslipidemia group was 866,6 ± 1369 x 104Î1⁄4m2 (p= 0,026). Total cholesterol mean concentration in Group I was 200.5 ± 44.5 mg/dl , Group II was 216.0 ± 62.5 mg/dl and Group III was 242.1 ± 56.8 mg/dl with p for trend = 0.035. Group I had mean concentration of non HDL cholesterol 155.8± 42.5 mg/dl, Group II was 169.7± 60.6 mg/dl and Group III was 197.8± 53.7 mg/dl, p for trend = 0,023. Dyslipidemia group was 2,6 times risk higher than nondyslipidemia group to have retinal hard exudates > 3 disc diameter (prevalence ratio = 2,6
