The problems are (1) what are the linguistic forms of promise utterances, (2) what are the intentions of the promise utterances, (3) what are the reasons of the using of promise utterances in Barack Obama’s campaign speeches. This data uses documentation and observation methods to get the data. The data are promising utterances used by Barack Obama’s campaign speeches. The source of the data is the manuscript of Barack Obama’s campaign speeches published in official website of United States of America Government. To answer those problems, this research employs qualitative research method and analyzed by using socio-pragmatics analysis, especially the form of promising utterances by using theory of sentence form, the intention of the speaker by applying speech act theory, and the reason of the speaker by applying SPEAKING theory.
