  • The aim of the work was to investigate the optimum plating time with regards to the hardness and wear specific in the electroplating process of copper with nickel underlayer on an aluminium substrate with a diameter of 16 mm and 4 mm thickness. The electroplating process of copper was carried out using plating time of 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 Volt, while the nickel underlayer was plated using 30 minute time. The voltage of the DC electrical source was kept using 3 Volt. The cross sectional area of the sample was observed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The hardness of the surface was measured using Vickers hardness test, while the wear rate was observed using an Oghosi universal wear testing machine (type oat-U). The properties of the surface before and after the electroplating were compared. The results showed that the optimum plating time for the hardness was achieved at a plating time of 90 minutes, where the hardness of Aluminium before and after electroplating of nickel has increased from 76,82 VHN to 224,32 VHN. The wear specific of Al before and after plating has reduced from 1,749 x 10-4 mm2/kg, to 3,126 x 10-5 mm2/kg when using a plating time of 90 minutes.
