  • With the rapid growth of manufacturing and construction industries, strong materials are required in the manufacture of industrial pipe, ship building, condensers, and heat exchangers. This study aims to improve the carbon steel with a multilayer coating process or electroplating of Cr/Cu, where Cu was the top layer above the Cr. The substrate was made by a low carbon steel ST 40 with a diameter of 16 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. Cr electroplating solution was prepared using cromic acid and sulfuric acid. Meanwhile, electroplating solution of Cu was prepared using CuSO4. The electroplating process of Cr was performed using a voltage of 6 volts with a constant immersion 60 minutes, whereas the electroplating process of Cu was conducted using the voltages of 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 volts with a constant dip time of 30 minutes. The thickness of the coating product was done from photograph and the testing of mechanical properties was done by Vickers microhardness. The test results of micro photo showed that the coating thickness produced using 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 volt were 73.2 μm Cr & 17.4 μm Cu; 48.2 μm Cr & 36.9 μm Cu; 26.9 μm Cr & 38.0 μm Cu; 46.4 μm Cr & 52.5 μm Cu; 74.8 μm Cr & 70.0 μm Cu, respectively. The coating hardnesses of plated Cu formed using 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 volt Cu were 42.70 HV; 57.70 HV; 66.70 HV; 75.13 HV; and 83.87 HV, respectively. The wear of Cu plated using 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 volt produced a wear rate of 7.2x10-6 mm2/Kg; 7.0x10-6 mm2/Kg; 5.6x10-6 mm2/Kg; 4.7x10-6 mm2/Kg; 2.8x10-6 mm2/Kg, respetively.
