- With the rapid growth of manufacturing and construction industries, strong materials are required for any applications such as in the manufacture of industrial pipe, ship building, condensers, and heat exchangers. This study aims to improve the carbon steel with a coating or elctroplating process of multilayer Ni/Cu, where Cu was the top layer above the Ni layer. The substrate was made by a low carbon steel ST 40 with a diameter of 16 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. Ni electroplating solution was prepared using nickel sulfate, Nickel Chloride and Boric Acid. Meanwhile, Cu electroplating solution was prepared CuSO4. In the electroplating process of Ni was carried using a voltage of 2.3 volts with plating time of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes. The electroplating process of Cu was done using a voltage of 1.9 volts with a plating made constant 30 minutes. The thickness of the coating product was measured by photomicro observed using an optical microscope. The mechanical properties testing of the Cu layer was characterized using a Vickers hardness test and wear test. The results showed that using the plating time of nickel with 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes and Cu layer with 30 minutes produced 19.9 μm thick Cu Ni /14.5 μm; 48.4 μm Ni / Cu 19.9 μm; 50.1 μm Ni / Cu 26.7 μm; 62.1 μm Ni / Cu 40.4 μm; 64.9 μm Ni / Cu 16.8 μm. The hardness of Cu layer for 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes a layer of Ni and Cu layer 30 minutes generated HV 91.6 Cu, 93.2 HV, HV 97.9, 102.6 HV and HV 106.1 respectively. The wear of Cu coating produced using plating time of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes a layer of Ni and Cu layer 30 minutes generated the rate of wear area of 6.59 x 10-6 mm2/kg, 6.11 x 10-6 mm2/kg, 5.99 x 10-6 mm2/kg, 3.63 x 10-6 mm2/kg and 3.55 x 10-6 mm2/kg, respectively.
