  • Bitter melon is a plant that be used as traditional medicine because has some benefits one of those is as an antibacterial. The leaf and fruit extracts have antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The purpose of this research was to investigate the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit against Escherichia coli multiresistant bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus multi\resistant bacteria and to know chemical compound that has antibacterial activity. Maceration was well dry powder of bitter melon fruit was soaked in 96% ethanol for 9 days. Antibacterial test was done by using diffusion method with chloramphenicol (30 μg) as positive control and Dimetil Sulfoksida (DMSO) 100% as negative control. Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) was carried out for analysing the chemical contents using mobile phase of chloroform: methanol (9:1,) and silica GF254 as solid phase continued with contact bioautography. The results test showed that ethanolic extract of bitter melon were at 15 mg have antibacterial activity with average inhibition zones of 10,22 mm on multiresistant E. coli and 12,33 mm on multiresistant S. aureus. The result of TLC showed that extract contains terpenoids and flavonoids compounds. The result of bioautography showed that compound that responsible as antibacterial agent against multiresistant S. aureus was terpenoid.
