- Background : Fluoride contained materials are effective in inhibit demineralization on tooth structure adjacent to restoration. The antibacterial properties of fluoride contained material can reduce the colonization of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus on the tooth restoration such as Resin Modified Glass Ionomer Cement (RMGIC) and Compomer, also may improve the restorative treatment outcome.Purpose : This experiment evaluates the antibacterial effect RMGIC and Compomer on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus in vitro.Method : Cylindrical specimen of RMGIC and Compomer prepared were immersed in artificial saliva for 60 minutes, then rinsed with PBS. Each sample contaminated with Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Using vortex for 1 minute to take out the bacteria from samples. Then incubated for 48 hours. Count the colony with colony counter.Result : There is significance difference between the number of colony of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus on RMGIC dan Compomer.Conclusion : The antibacterial effect of RMGIC more effective than Compomer to inhibit Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus colony formation.Keyword : Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, RMGIC, Compomer, antibacterial effect.
