  • Idioms are language expressions in the form of a combination of words (phrases) whose meaning are fused and cannot be interpreted with the meaning of the elements that compose them. Idioms are part of the language we often encounter in our daily lives, but we are not aware that we often encounter them or even use them. The porpose examined in this thesis is students' understanding levels of common idioms. This research used qualitative descriptive and narrative approach was since the focus of the research to students’ understanding level of common idioms. The data was collected through documentation and interview technique using test and interview guideline as instrument of the research. Then the result of the study is presented by narratively. Student’s understanding levels has five levels, there are: Advanced, Mastery, Proficient, Basic, and Below Basic. The result of the test showed that most of students at the level of below basic based on the test. It proved by more than half of participants have a below basic level result from the test. Various factor can cause the result. The use of English for both academic terms and casual activities probably give the strongest contribution for the students, specifically in achieving the score.
