  • Through this research, the researcher study about the phenomenon of code switching and code mixing used by English teachers to their students in class activities. There are several reasons why researcher chooses English teachers as the subject of the study. First reason is those English teachers are those who are expert conversation, especially in class activities. Secondly, the phenomenon of code switching and code mixing that happens in SMPN 40 Surabaya was not observed before by English department student, in fact it frequently happens both intentionally and unintentionally. Moreover, researcher is also curious about the reason why the teachers use code switching and code mixing in the teaching learning process in the class. The result of the research shows that there were some types of code switching and code mixing which were used by teachers in a class. They were code switching in the form of sentence, clause, and tag. On the code mixing, the researcher found in the form of word and phrase. The second question of the study is the context of code switching and code mixing. It h four features that trigger the occurrence of code switching and code mixing; they are topic, setting, key, and purpose. The three features of context determine the language choice in the class activity. The last one was about the reason why the teachers used code switching and code mixing in the class. The result shows that the main reason why teachers used code switching and code mixing in the class to make student understand although it also depended on the grade of students, to introduce new vocabularies, and to make the nuance of classroom relax.
