- This article was written based on the study of traditional Batak's kecapi instruments and their music, as part of Batak culture. The physical appearance of the Kecapi instruments which belong to the Batak ethnic in Northern Sumatera island was particularly a small-sized short-necked two-stringed lute and was found within the four Batak sub-ethnic groups: the Toba, the Simalungun, the Karo, and the Pakpak. The study was divided into two parts: (1) concerning the instrument, and (2) its music. The result achieved from the collected data analysis shown that the dualistic aspect of the Batak kecapi instruments expressed their respective ethnological backgrounds, such as differences and similarities among them in terms of their musical forms, scales, and repertory themes. Basically the instruments have two strings made of nylon or metal, a big soundhole at the rear, and decorated within human motif carvings in some parts of its body, which look like a boat shape. The differences can be seen in their soundhole and front feature shape as well as the carving motifs. Most of the Toba kecapi music was adapted from sacred Gondang music, whereas in the SImalungun, the Karo and the Pakpak, the theme expresses mostly about their environment and social life.
